Tuesday

The crazy thing about the airport in Amman is that there is absolutely nothing around! I was amazed that we had to drive for an hour before we got to any civilization at all. However, that didn't stop me from having an interesting learning experience.

During the ride, my driver started talking to me in English. I was a bit surprised that he spoke anything but Arabic. I'm glad he did though. I told him that I didn't know much Arabic and I asked if he could teach me a little. He said he would, so on the way to my first destination, Jerash, I learned quite a few phrases in Arabic.

When we got to Jerash (which, by the way, is one of the best preserved old Roman cities in the Middle East), it started raining. HARD. Wanna hear it? Anyway, it was really raining, and they had to delay the tour for about an hour. So during that time, I learned more Arabic from my driver. His name is Latif, which means kind or friendly. I'm glad I had him with me, because I'd be lost on my tour without him.

The whole thing was in arabic! I asked Latif if he would come along with me to translate, which he happily agreed to. The sites were just amazing! Especially because I could actually understand what they were talking about. Here are some pictures...

I'm really glad that I got the opportunity to go to Jerash and see the ruins. I can't imagine what it would have been like to live there. I'm also amazed that it was even possible to carve this city out of complete stone. Think of what it would be like to do that! A LOT of work.

Well, I went back to my hotel and ate; it had been a long and busy day. I learned a lot of Arabic and even more about Jerash. I'm tired and ready for bed so, see you tomorrow!
