I woke up this morning feeling a bit sick. It must have been from all that food I ate yesterday. But that didn't stop me from going to Petra (stone in English) - an old city carved from a rosy type of stone.I drove over in another taxi (by now I can tell which are which) but the drive wasn't very interesting. He just asked where I was going, in English, and then drove me there. When we got there he told me how much to pay and I payed it. Nothing too exciting.
No matter. As soon as I looked away from my driver I was awestruck. The first thing I saw was a giant temple carved out of the mountain side. The roof just melded into the rest of the cliff. It was as detailed as a Greek temple, but carved out of rock!
Now only was it amazing, but also beautiful. The stone was a soft, rosy pink that was nice on my eyes and absorbed most of the sun. I could actually look at it without going partially blind! I could actually tell that the little figure in the top of the building was a person! Next to a horse! I know it doesn't sound so exciting, but since my eyes are pretty bad (in the sense that I can barely look at a spot close to the sun without hurting my eyes), it was great to be able to actually see something!
Anyway, the tour was to start in five minutes, so I sat around admiring the temple that was in my sight. But there was more than just that to admire.
I found this out as soon as we started trekking around through the carvings. There were churches, shops, even plain old houses. My favorite was the house that we got to go inside of. There were little seats around a table, all carved out of the same stone. However, other than that and a few walls, it was empty. I was a bit surprised that there was nothing else there.
Oh well, it was fascinating just as much. It somehow got cloudy while we were in the house, and by the time we got back to the entrance it started pouring. There wasn't much shelter, so I decided there wasn't much of a point and I just stood out in the rain, feeling each droplet of water fall on my skin. I probably looked like a lunatic...Anyway, I've got to get to bed. I have a long day ahead of me... I think...
